Google Analytics - Basic Concepts
Google Analytics is a google provided free tool. Initial time Google Analytics is the property of Urchin Software Corporation. Google acquires Urchin in 2005. After acquisition google rebuilt Urchins technology. Integrate it with googles infrastructure. Google officially launched Google Analytics in 2005.
Evolution stages of Google Analytics
GA1
This refers to Urchin Analytics, before and just after Google acquisition.
GA2
First popular Google Analytics version formed in 2012. JavaScript tracking code introduced. Focus on page view and sessions also give ideas about organic traffic keywords. Only we can add JavaScript code on head section only.
GA3
This refers to Universal Analytics. Introduce interaction-based tracking. we can add JavaScript code on anywhere not only head section.
GA4
In 2023 introduce latest version GA4. We can use it on mobile app also by using tracking code. Notice user navigations and sessions. Initially GA4 is not quicker than other versions but, gradually the issue solved.

Traffic sources in Google Analytics
In Google Analytics, Traffic Sources show where your website visitors come from.
- Direct Traffic
Directly search Website address in URL entering area.
- Organic Traffic
Traffic from search engines like google, Bing, Yahoo. Users search a keyword on search engine and click a website. That website counts this visit by organic traffic.
- Social media Traffic
Visit through social medias. Social media Traffic can be classified into two.
- Social media Organic Traffic: Visits through social media posts without payment.
- Social media Paid Traffic: Visits through the paid advertisement on social media platforms.
- Referral Traffic
Visits come from reference link of a website. If a site gives one website link as a reference, that visits can be counted as Referral Traffic visit.
- Ad Traffic
Visitors who come from to your website by clicking paid advertisements. Ad can be created by invest amount in advertisement programmes.
Google Analytics Installation procedure:
- Create account with an account name, we can create 100 accounts from one Gmail account, and each account can add 2000 properties.
- Give property details
- Should fill proper reporting time zone, it's better to add website associated country because time zone varies on each country.
- choose currency
- Enter business details
- Choose business size
- Select business objectives
- In Data collection area choose platform (web, android etc) and fill URL area and Stream name fields. Then click create and continue button after that we get a tracking code and copy it. Open Theme option in our blogger and take HTML edit portion then paste tracking code on head section.
- After the Tracking code insertion, we can save and click on Test installation, after the successful installation click on confirm button and continue to home. By following these steps, we can successfully install Google Analytics.
